The George Carlin quote in the title of this post couldn't be more telling of public relations work. It is a completely thankless job most of the time... and when I say most of the time, I mean all of the time. But in some ways, this lack of recognition might be a good thing. Just the other day, a PR professional told me that if the public doesn't know what she's doing, then she's doing her job.
Besides the common misconceptions, a lot of people don't have the slightest idea about what public relations really means (and I'll go ahead and tell you, it's not just "relating to the public"). I'll use a comparison to try and clear up any confusion.
Think of your typical mom. She is her child's own personal cheerleader. She makes sure you're teeth are brushed and your shoes are tied before you head out for school. She tells you to sit up straight and has that special touch that makes every "ouchie" feel better. When you get that big part in the school play, she rehearses with you until you get every line just right. She is always in the crowd for your big moments telling everyone in earshot "that's my baby!" Could she take the credit for the wonderful person you've grown into? Probably some, but she knew you had it in you all along, and that's all the satisfaction she needs.
In PR, we are the "mom" of each client and each project we take on. We develop special relationships and put our whole heart into every task. When there's a problem, we handle it. When there's an accomplishment, we boast about it. And in the end, we are just as proud as any parent (and we've probably put in about the same number of hours).
So, when I make it, you can look for me, but I hope you won't find me. Rather, look for the butterflies. That's how you'll know I'm doing my job.
you go caterpillar! :)
